Phil Pyke recently started with TasICT in the CEO role, coming from a
background as business development manager with Fruit Growers Tasmania.

He also has a background in media and political advising, export market
development, strategic communications and is also a long serving Defence

"I am excited about the opportunities in the Tasmanian ICT sector," said

"Already I have observed there are many people and companies undertaking
substantial work at the state, national and international levels."

Phil said ICT is a key economic driver for this State but this is not
widely realised in many areas, including Government.

In his previous role, Phil had the opportunity to brief the Business
Development team at the Alibaba Group in Hangzhou to assist market access

While there is a positive future ahead in the current environment, Phil
said opportunities must also be opened for Tasmanian ICT companies in the
growing areas of Defence industry, advanced manufacturing and

And, according to Phil, the challenges remain in creating the next
generation work-force.

"One of the challenges which is ever present is that of digital literacy,"
said Phil.

"Tasmania is a State where literacy and numeracy levels in schools are a
constant challenge. Yet in this rapidly changing world,  there is a need
for skills be taken to the next level into digital literacy and pathways
into skills, training and jobs."

Phil said underpinning the next four years would be strong partnerships
with the Australian Computer Society, who are working hard in the
education space and other industry based groups.
